Joints connect bones within the body, help us bear weight and are responsible for movement and stability. Joints are made up of bone, muscles, synovial fluid, cartilage and ligaments. Smooth tissue called cartilage and synovium and synovial fluid which acts as a lubricant, cushion the joints so bones do not rub together. But increasing age, injury, or carrying too much weight can wear and tear the cartilage and damage the joints.

Bone formation and bone resorption (replacement of old bone tissue) take place throughout life, although at different rates at different times and at different sites within the skeleton. In childhood the process enables the bones to grow; in adulthood the purpose is maintenance but as we progress through adulthood, bone resorption occurs at a faster rate than bone formation. The consequence of this is a gradual fall in bone density as we age.
